Coconut Oil Good as Sunscreen

uvodna1 Coconut Oil Good as Sunscreen

Coconut oil good as sunscreen?

In the 70's my mother would lather herself in oil while sun baking to help increase her chances of getting a tan. Sowas this an old wives tale?

I kept hearing people talk about using coconut oil as sunscreen, thats a bit different,  so I had to find out for myself. It turns out, some oils do block a percentage of the suns rays. And while coconut oil can cut out up to 20% of UV rays, sesame oil blocks up to 30% and cod liver oil up toa whopping 90%. But really, who wants to smell like they've been rolling in the offal sinks down at the boat ramps.

Now, not to confuse anyone, a percentage of 20 does not correlate to a 20+ SPF rating.

In sunscreen language 15+ blocks out 94% of UVrays, 30+blocks out 97% and 48+ blocks 98%. So at 20% coconutoil is probably sitting close to the 1+ SPF rating?

Some might argue higher rated sunscreens contribute to vitamin D deficiency inpeople, I’m not sure i'd go that far. Office jobs and long hours spent indoors with technology are more likely to be doing that id say. But sunscreens do contain chemicals.

If you like the idea of using coconut oil toreplace your sunscreen just be responsible. Don’t go out in peak UV times for very long.

For me, it might be something I use when going outside for a walk in the mid to late afternoon. Keep in mind coconut oils UV protection wont last for hours and is not waterproof.

But it smells like summer and is a great natural alternative to chemical sunscreen when used responsibly. Another option isto mix coconut oil with zinc oxide, a great way to minimises these chemicals.

Coconut Oil Good – Pancakes

pancakes Coconut Oil Good Pancakes

Normally Pancakes are not the healthiest breakfast. But when done the right way, compared to toast and many cereals they really can be a healthier option.  Great news for your kiddies  and of course for you too.

This recipes makes about 8 creamy coconut pancakes.

2/3 cup plain flour (organic)

2/3 cup self raising flour (organic)

1 egg

270ml coconut cream

500ml water

1 banana

1 punnet - berries of your choice

plain or greek yogurt

coconut oil

In a  bowl combine coconut cream and most of the water. Add all flour, egg and thinly chopped banana.  The mixture consistency should be similar to thickened cream. Add more water if required.

Heat up a fry pan on medium heat. Add coconut oil and a dollop of pancake mixture.

Of course fillings can range from honey or maple syrup to fruit or jam.

For me i rarely eat sugar so berries and greek yogurt in a rolled pancake really hits the spot for me.

Enjoy!

Coconut Oil Good for Beards

beard11 Coconut Oil Good for Beards Is Coconut  oil good on beards you ask?

AndI don’t mean by accident like how most edible produce ends up on a beard. Like 'if I keep eating  lemon’s will the juice eventually bleach my beard?'.

Coconut oil makes the hair more relaxed, less wiry and not so itchy. This will be a serious plus if you have a beardless partner since its a great way to reduce pash rash and other intimacy irritations that can arise from having a beard.

I’ve also read some people experience an increase in hair growth when treating their hair with coconut oil regularly. So any serious Frida Kahlo fans out there, slap some across your brow and see what comes of it. I apply it every day to my whole face and nothing yet, just awesome soft skin.

Back to the beard.

I guess you could call this a beard treatment.

Before you shampoo, lather your beard in coconut oil and leave for as long as you can, the longer the better but at least 30 mins.

You may need to shampoo twice to get the excess oil. Then condition.

Voila!! A sexy, soft and silky beard.

Coconut Oil Good in Toothpaste and Oil Pulling

coconutoil toothpaste 300x30011111 Coconut Oil Good in Toothpaste and Oil Pulling

Why is Coconut Oil Good in toothpaste?

Firstly why would you make your own toothpaste? The great debate on fluoride may go on for a long time but there are plenty of other chemicals in toothpaste to be concerned about.

I recently met a woman at a lunch who is a researcher at the University of Wollongong in NSW, Australia. She had been involved in research that strongly supported fluoride in town water showing dental health was poorer in regions where people had their own water supply or where fluoride was not in the town water. Although this is not new evidence and there is evidence to the contrary, her argument was that we shouldn’t fuss about the chemical Fluoride, its pros outweighed its cons since we would be taking in chemicals from all of the dental work needed after years without having fluoride in our water.

I’m not sure I agree with her but its still a point to consider.

Fluoride is a chemical that simply put creates a very thin layer over tooth enamel, this layer makes it hard for bacteria to stay on teeth and easy for us to brush the bacteria off. But it’s still a chemical that is easily swallowed and absorbed through our gums. Fluoride is toxic for your body in large doses however scientists argue that a person would need to drink 100L of water for it to be harmful. Having said that fluoride does still cause Fluorosis in children and has also proven to create microfractures in bones when used in high concentrations for treatments of osteoporosis (2).Obviously this wont happen to the average person however it does show fluoride is not completely harmless.

To remove fluoride from tap water you need a filter. Boiling the water will remove the chlorine and any other water cleaning agents but not fluoride.

Like water, toothpaste has Fluoride, but it also has other harmful chemicals such as SLS's which can cause ulcers. Ihave to worry about putting something in my mouth that has the warning 'do not swallow'. Definitely not a good thing for toddlers or pets.

So what do we do?

You might decide you want some fluoride so you filter your water and use chemical toothpaste or not filter the water and use homemade paste, or you might decide you dont want any fluoride at all. Keep in mind there are other chemicals in water and toothpaste besides fluoride as mentioned. Eitherway, you choose how you manage living with chemicals.

For those who are looking for alternatives, coconut oil can help fight the nasty bacteria in your mouth and gut and is great on sensitive teeth.

(1)A study conducted by the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland found that enzyme modified coconut oil (recreating the reaction that happens when coconut oil meets the enzymes in your body) strongly inhibited the growth of most strains of streptococcus bacteria, a common inhabitant of the mouth including an acid producing bacterium that is a major cause of tooth decay. They also found it was harmful to yeast, a common cause of thrush in the mouth and body.

This looks to be the only research to date on coconut oil and mouth bacteria. However, there are plenty of people writing about their personal and sometimes life changing experiences using coconut oil in toothpaste.

So here is my easy toothpaste recipe.

4Tbs bicarb soda for removing out tooth stains

1/8 tsp dried, crushed and powered egg shells for calcium Magnesium and whitening

2 tbs coconut oil for whitening and antibacterial properties

Essential oils – tea tree (careful, particularly strong) peppermint, lemon, orange, cinnamon powder.

I personally love the cinnamon. I read recently that there was a herbal cinnamon toothpaste on the market which gave some people mouth and teeth problems but these were rectified after changing toothpastes. The research suggested it was the cinnamon causing these problems. I guess like a lot of herbal stuff, there may be some people who will have a reaction and some who will not.

Oil pulling

Oil pulling is a great technique similar to the way we use mouthwash. Take a small mouthful of coconut oil,  swish it around your mouth drawing through and around your teeth. Try to do this for 15 mins each day after brushing .

What this does is pull out bacteria, viruses and fungi which cause plaque accumulation.

To finish, spit out the oil, you don’t want to swallow these toxins, then wrince your mouth out with water. done.

It's great to find alternatives to chemicals with proof that they actually do the job.

Coconut Oil Good for Weight Loss

Is Coconut oil good for weight loss?

Although it sounds odd to eat saturated fat to lose weight it could be true in the case of coconut oil

Coconut oil manages blood sugar level to help with cravings. It also supports your thyroid to keep a healthy metabolism. Polyunsaturated oil works against the thyroid, which results in a slowed metabolism.

Keep in mind you can increase your metabolism by increasing the amount of water you drink each day to the recommended 2 Litres.

photo11122111112 Coconut Oil Good for Weight Loss

Some farmers added coconut oil to their animals diet hoping it would fatten up their livestock to increase profit’s. But the animals started to lose weight. When they switched over to corn and soybeans for the high polyunsaturated oil content the animals weight moved straight back up. Soybean oil in particular has a strong negative affect on the Thyroid.(1-2-3)

Coconut oil is made up of 66% Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA). These fatty Acids are not easily absorbed and stored in the body like Long Chain Fatty Acids (LCFA) rather they are sitting energy ready to be used. If taken prior to a work it gives the body an extra boost and endurance.

An animal study was conducted with 3 different diets. A low fat diet, a high fat diet with MCFA and a high fat diet with LCFA. The Study went for 44 days.  The results showed that over this time the MCFA diet stored less than 50% of the fat of the other 2 diets who stored close to the same grams of fat per day. (4)

What’s interesting about this study is that shows if we eat a healthy diet containing MCFA we are more likely to lose weight than if we are on a low fat diet without MCFA.

In other studies those who weren’t losing weight by adding coconut oil to their diet found if they eliminated polyunsaturated fats from their diets they could then lose the weight. Some had not lost weight but replaced fat with muscle(6). Others found coconut oil only reduced their waistline.(5)

Although we are talking just about weigh loss, coconut oil has so many healthy properties giving an over all positive affect on the bodies function. When your body is healthy and running well your weight is healthy too.

Coconut oil contains the most concentrated source of MCFA available. The idea is to replace LCFA with MCFA.

It has been recommended that the average adult can take 3- 4 tablespoons per day depending on weight. This is to receive enough MCFA for optimal health and is based on what a baby receives per day from breast milk. However, I personally take 1 – 2 Tbs per day which is enough to replace other fats I would use each day.

It is advised that you start off with just 1 teaspoon per day. There are no serious side affects if you hit the coconut oil a bit too hard. It can make your stomach feel a little off and you may get some diarrhea but nothing more. And of course always use virgin coconut oil or cold pressed, nothing refined as this process reduces the good stuff.

Losing weight is about having a healthy life style, there is no quick fix. I use coconut oil to replace other trans fats and this is good for my weight and health. But If you really want to see some quick results in losing weight eliminate all trans fats and cane sugar from your diet. Challenge yourself for 1 month and see the results. For some yummy sugar free treats to help you with cravings check out my simple recipes – Chocolate and choc chip cookies or Easter eggs.

Good luck with your new life style.

Coconut Oil Good for Alzheimer's.

Is Coconut Oil Good for Alzheimer’s?

Since there is no cure for Alzheimer's people are turning to coconut oil. But does it really work, and where is the hard scientific evidence?

Brain cells require glucose to function. When a person has Alzheimer’s, neurons in certain areas of the brain can't absorb glucose due to insulin resistance so they die off. Brain cells can use Ketones to live.

Virgin Coconut Oil has medium chain triglycerides that the body converts into Ketones and in many cases this has shown to improve cognitive function.

clip image0021 Coconut Oil Good for Alzheimer's.

Axona® developed a Ketone food which has coconut oil in it (1). The well researched prescription shows improved memory and cognition. It has a low risk of side effects such as nausea and diarrhoea.  The prescription is FDA regulated but there is more research being done to look at both it’s long term affects and detail on the types of Dementias it most improves.

The Krikorian et al. 2012 study (1) (2) showed positive change from a Ketogenic diet for people with mild cognitive impairment. Further study’s are required on details such as which Virgin Coconut Oil work best.

These are currently the only true scientific studies done to date that I could find on the relationship between Alzheimer's and coconut oil in humans.

There are plenty of experience stories about people suffering from Dementia and specifically Alzheimer’s who have had their lives changed by including Coconut Oil in their diet. But some people found it didnt make any difference to their condition.

Dr. Mary Newport conducted a study on her husband Steve who was suffering acute Alzheimer’s. It had deteriorated his life over 5 years and he would spend days in a fog, often unable to even ‘find a spoon or get water out of the refrigerator’.

Dr. Newport gave her husband 7 teaspoons of virgin coconut oil each morning over a period of 60 days. She noticed some amazing changes over this period. By the end of the 60 days Steve was showing more alertness, conversation and a sense of humor.

To read the full case study, www.coconutketones.com/whatifcure.pdf

Recently on her website Dr. Mary Newport thanked those who had sent stories of their own experiences with using coconut oil and the affect it had on their own or their loved ones Alzheimer's. Some people had not found changes but the majority of people had made some form of progress. These stories were used to apply for grants to have more research done on the affects of coconut oil on people with mild cognitive impairment. Those trials have recently started at the University of South Florida (USF) Byrd Alzheimer Institute.

Coconut Oil Good - Easter Eggs

With Easter just around the corner I thought this might be a great time to break out my favourite Coconut Oil Good recipe.

Easter Eggs with Coconut Oil - Sugar free, Vegan, Gluten free and Kid friendly

chocolate easter eggs in a natural bird nest wrapped in green foil over white background1111111111 Coconut Oil Good   Easter Eggs

Ingredients:

1 cup of dates- (for gluten free check packaging, flour can be used for separating moist dates)

1 cup of nuts and shredded coconut – I use a mix of almonds, pepita seeds, sesame seeds and chia seeds. But just use what ever you have on hand.

3-4 tbs of fair trade cocoa powder – More or less for personal taste.

2 tbs Coconut Oil

Foil – optional.

Now, there are 2 ways of doing this, the smooth way and the crunchy way. You may like to split the ingredients to do both, giving your eggs some variety.

I personally prefer the crunchy way, i like to chew the dates, crunch the nuts and the chocolate is harder and richer. The smooth way gives a texture similar to a chocolate brownie or rum ball.

Smooth way:

Mix fruit and nut ingredients in food processor, place in bowl, stir in cocoa powder, add coconut oil in liquid form, to melt place coconut oil jar in a bowl of hot water. Roll mixture into balls then shape into eggs, put in fridge until firm then wrap in foil

Crunchy way:

(use only 2/3 cup nuts and coconut) Roughly chop nuts and dates, place in bowl, add coconut, seeds and cocoa powder, mix ingredients, add coconut oil in liquid form, to melt just sit jar in a bowl of hot water. Make sure coconut oil covers all ingredients, you may need to add more. Put in fridge for a couple of minutes so mixture is malleable. Roll mixture into balls then shape into eggs, put in fridge until firm then wrap in foil.

Coconut Oil Good for Atopic Dermatitis

Is Coconut Oil Good for Atopic Dermatitis?

clip image002111111 Coconut Oil Good for Atopic Dermatitis

Results from various studies comparing coconut oil to olive oil found that although both oils proved positive results, coconut oil was almost twice as affective as olive oil (1) (2).  The oil soothed participants dermatitis just as well as medications. However, the oil did need to be applied twice each day or more for severe cases.

There was one case I read where someone had a bad reaction to coconut oil. This didn’t seem to be a common occurrence and i'd image comparable to any reactions to medication.

Expelled pressed coconut oil can be just as affective as virgin coconut oil even though it is generally slightly lower in quality after processing but for those who don’t like the smell of coconut this is perfect because is odourless and still 100% chemical free. The other bonus to Expelled coconut oil is it's much cheaper than virgin coconut oil.

It's no surprise to me people find Coconut Oil helpful for Dermatitis since it supports the natural chemical balance of the skin and it's medium chain fatty acids restore damaged skin by healing and repairing tissue as well as reducing inflammation.

I’d be interested to hear from people who have tried coconut oil themselves to treat Dematitis and how they found it worked compared to medications.

Coconut Oil Good in Chocolate and Cookies

Coconut oil good in chocolate, really?

1352296835 453481107 1 Pictures of Home made chocolates from ooty kodaikanal11111111 Coconut Oil Good in Chocolate and CookiesThis is a simple way to incorporate coconut oil into your diet for its many health benefits . It is also a great sweet fix for people going sugar free or vegan.

The cocoa bean has many health benefits on its own but mixed with sugar and other nasties its negatives have out weighed its positives.

The best thing about this home made chocolate is that you know exactly what's in it.

So, what is in it?

Organic virgin coconut oil

Organic fair trade cocoa powder

Stevia (or sugar)

Optional – finely chopped craisins, coconut, nuts or seeds, cayenne pepper or some fresh mint.

All ingredients in equal parts for starters. However, each can vary depending on your personal tastes.

Put everything in a bowl over a pot of boiling water and melt together. Spoon portions into moulds, then into the freezer for 20 mins to harden.

You can use silicon moulds, but when I first tried this recipe I just made a simple mould out of foil.

Store in your fridge.

This chocolate is very rich and dark,  if you want to soften its flavour a bit you might add some thickened cream.

Be careful not to binge eat with it since your body needs to gradually work up to higher levels of coconut oil to avoid nausea. So just monitor your intake.

Since the chocolate is rich it's perfect in chocolate choc chip cookies. You can grab any recipe online but my favourite is this crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside recipe:

                                                   125g butter

1 1/4 cup stevia (or brown sugar)

                                                   1 egg

                                                   2-3 tbs cocoa powder

                                                  1 cup self raising flour

                                                  3/4 cup plain flour

                                                 1/2 tsp baking powder

                                                1 cup chocolate chips

Heat oven to 160 deg C (320 deg F). Melt butter, pour over sugar and stir till cooled. Stir in egg, sift in flour and baking powder, stir in cocoa powder then chocolate chips. Put round table spoons of mixture on lined baking trays. Bake for 12 mins. Cool for 3 mins.

I hope you enjoy cooking with these recipes and please share any of your coconut oil recipes by writing in the comments section below.
