Why is Coconut Oil Good in toothpaste?
Firstly why would you make your own toothpaste? The great debate on fluoride may go on for a long time but there are plenty of other chemicals in toothpaste to be concerned about.
I recently met a woman at a lunch who is a researcher at the University of Wollongong in NSW, Australia. She had been involved in research that strongly supported fluoride in town water showing dental health was poorer in regions where people had their own water supply or where fluoride was not in the town water. Although this is not new evidence and there is evidence to the contrary, her argument was that we shouldn’t fuss about the chemical Fluoride, its pros outweighed its cons since we would be taking in chemicals from all of the dental work needed after years without having fluoride in our water.
I’m not sure I agree with her but its still a point to consider.
Fluoride is a chemical that simply put creates a very thin layer over tooth enamel, this layer makes it hard for bacteria to stay on teeth and easy for us to brush the bacteria off. But it’s still a chemical that is easily swallowed and absorbed through our gums. Fluoride is toxic for your body in large doses however scientists argue that a person would need to drink 100L of water for it to be harmful. Having said that fluoride does still cause Fluorosis in children and has also proven to create microfractures in bones when used in high concentrations for treatments of osteoporosis (2).Obviously this wont happen to the average person however it does show fluoride is not completely harmless.
To remove fluoride from tap water you need a filter. Boiling the water will remove the chlorine and any other water cleaning agents but not fluoride.
Like water, toothpaste has Fluoride, but it also has other harmful chemicals such as SLS's which can cause ulcers. Ihave to worry about putting something in my mouth that has the warning 'do not swallow'. Definitely not a good thing for toddlers or pets.
So what do we do?
You might decide you want some fluoride so you filter your water and use chemical toothpaste or not filter the water and use homemade paste, or you might decide you dont want any fluoride at all. Keep in mind there are other chemicals in water and toothpaste besides fluoride as mentioned. Eitherway, you choose how you manage living with chemicals.
For those who are looking for alternatives, coconut oil can help fight the nasty bacteria in your mouth and gut and is great on sensitive teeth.
(1)A study conducted by the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland found that enzyme modified coconut oil (recreating the reaction that happens when coconut oil meets the enzymes in your body) strongly inhibited the growth of most strains of streptococcus bacteria, a common inhabitant of the mouth including an acid producing bacterium that is a major cause of tooth decay. They also found it was harmful to yeast, a common cause of thrush in the mouth and body.
This looks to be the only research to date on coconut oil and mouth bacteria. However, there are plenty of people writing about their personal and sometimes life changing experiences using coconut oil in toothpaste.
So here is my easy toothpaste recipe.
4Tbs bicarb soda for removing out tooth stains
1/8 tsp dried, crushed and powered egg shells for calcium Magnesium and whitening
2 tbs coconut oil for whitening and antibacterial properties
Essential oils – tea tree (careful, particularly strong) peppermint, lemon, orange, cinnamon powder.
I personally love the cinnamon. I read recently that there was a herbal cinnamon toothpaste on the market which gave some people mouth and teeth problems but these were rectified after changing toothpastes. The research suggested it was the cinnamon causing these problems. I guess like a lot of herbal stuff, there may be some people who will have a reaction and some who will not.
Oil pulling
Oil pulling is a great technique similar to the way we use mouthwash. Take a small mouthful of coconut oil, swish it around your mouth drawing through and around your teeth. Try to do this for 15 mins each day after brushing .
What this does is pull out bacteria, viruses and fungi which cause plaque accumulation.
To finish, spit out the oil, you don’t want to swallow these toxins, then wrince your mouth out with water. done.
It's great to find alternatives to chemicals with proof that they actually do the job.
